The Book Thief
Markus Zusak
Pages read: 39 - 56
Short Summary of Events:
Of course, Liesel Merminger has not spent too much time living on Munich Street, after all- she just started staying there for a few months. But people have told her about Rudy's 'Jesse Owens incident' so many times- that now it felt as if she was there, being apart of Rudy's imaginary audience.
But later on, Liesel would have her own defining moment. It happened at a night, after a nightmare. The bed smelled different after she woke up. It smelled like piss. She wet her bed.
Fortunately, it was Papa Hans who came to her aid. He did his sheet cleaning heroics very quickly, eventually finding The Gravedigger's Handbook in Liesel's room. Unexpectedly though, he offered to teach Liesel how to read her book.
They would later go on trips to the riverbank to read together, and when the weather is feeling ill- they would do it in the basement, under the light of a kerosene lamp.
Although this endeavor to teach Liesel how to read didn't get her to pass the school reading test, it did help her understand words a lot better then she used to.
What is the most interesting part of the story at this point?
The style of narration is still my favorite. But besides that, the personal pasts of the Hubermann couple could turn out to be very interesting.
What new words did I learn and what do they mean?
Saumensch - Pig (insult intended for females)
Saukerl - Pig (insult intended for males)
Schweine - Swine (Pig)
Arscloch - Asshole
